  Laser Whitening
 
  This is achieved by the application of Laser (light) energy to a bleaching solution placed on the tooth. This results in whitening of the tooth in a short period of time. (1-2 hours), however results may be of a shorter duration.  
     
  Lip augmentation  
  A procedure used to increase lip size and definition. In most cases, a patient's own tissues, specifically fat or dermis and fat or dermal substitutes (i.e., Alloderm) are used.  
     
  Lipoplasty  
  Another term for liposuction. Liposculpture Another term for liposuction -- which implies that the surgeon is acting as a sculptor.  
     
  Liposuction  
  A procedure designed to remove excess fat through a suctioning process. Although it is not a substitute for weight loss, liposuction is an effective way of changing the body's shape and contour.  
     
  Microdermabrasion  
  A technique that employs a vacuum and sand-like crystals (usually aluminum oxide)to remove superficial layers of the skin. This has been referred to as the Parisian Peel and the Lunchtime Peel. The depth of abrasion, or resurfacing, is dependent on the length of time of application, the strength of the machine used and the machine settings.  
     
  Mid-facelift
 
  A surgical procedure in which the skin is pulled up toward the lower eyelid, and excess skin is removed. This has occasionally been referred to as the vertical facelift.  
     
  Reconstructive plastic surgery
 
  One type of plastic surgery that is performed on abnormal structures, whether caused by trauma, infection, developmental abnormalities, congenital defects, disease, and/or tumors. This type of surgery is usually performed to improve function, but may also be performed to approximate a normal appearance. By law, these procedures must be covered by health insurance carriers.  
     
  Rhinoplasty
 
  Plastic surgery designed to reshape the nose. This is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury, or help relieve some breathing problems.  
     
  Rhytidectomy
 
  The medical term for a facelift. A surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess facial fat, the tightening of facial muscles, and the stretching of facial skin -- to approximate a smoother, firmer appearance. The procedure takes place on either the face or neck, or both.
